Slab Cake

For those who are short on time or not so inclined to cook, purchasing a slab cake would be ideal if catering for a larger number at the birthday party. Iced slab cakes can be purchased from most large supermarkets (these have to be specially ordered), Sara Lee shops or wholesale food distributors, for example Bidfest and so forth for approximately $30.00

These cakes can be easily decorated with figurines in the theme of the party of which appeal to the child. The figurines can be purchased from cake shops, large supermarkets and retail shops, as well as toy stores. When I was younger I loved the Walt Disney series featuring “Tigger”. So my cake was decorated with Eeyore, Tigger, Piglet and Pooh figurines as well as candles to be blown out.

I love tigger!

The other option is to purchase an edible Icing Decoration or Image which can be placed on the cake. Again this can be in the theme of the party – Dora, Fairy, Princess, Cars and many, many more. It is important to keep the packet of the Icing Decoration sealed until needed as moisture will be absorbed which may impact on the end result. The Icing Decoration or Image costs between $6.00 to $7.00 in most stores.

I love birthday cakes, this one has one of my favourite characters on it!

Each cake had some piped icing in a colour that would stand out on the iced slab. There is several ways to pipe icing onto the cake. If you have a piping bag then you can use this. If not then you have to create a piping bag and this can be achieved by taking a pice of baking paper and rolling it to achieve a point.

Lastly, you could use a freezer bag and cut the corner off to create a piping bag.

More tigger! Yay!
